Sound Advice by Hurricane Linda |

Burning Man is a noisy place drums, music, whooping, laughing, screaming and that's part of the deal. Yet while the sound of a thumping bass is one thing to deal with, the continuous BRrrrrrAaaaaaaaaaaaPpp of a noisy generator is another. Generators are the leaf blowers of the Black Rock City suburbs. Our neighbourhood association doesn't want to ban them outright, but we do want to make a few ground rules known:
Don't run your generator past midnight, and don't start it up until about 10:00 a.m.
Think about placement. How close is your generator to neighbouring tents?
Talk it over with the neighbours if you want to go later than midnight, but remember, if they say you can run it all night, they're probably just trying to be nice. Compromise and consideration are the key.
Ask the place you're renting or buying from about the "whisper" models. Some are quieter than others, so make it clear to your retailer that noise is a primary concern when arranging a purchase or rental.
Cover your generator with a noise shield. Plans to construct a simple but fairly effective one are available at this very site.
Don't bury your generator we don't want holes in the playa but do bury its wires to eliminate a trip-hazard.
Remember, a little forethought and consideration by you can lead to a lot of peace and happiness for many.
